α-monoglycerides

FRA Gut Balance

FRA has developed FRA Gut Balance: a specific formula containing mainly 1-monoglycerides of propionic acid, butyric acid, caprylic acid and capric acid. Feeding this product will stimulate an optimal gut balance in poultry, resulting in improved health and production performances.

Dysbacteriosis is a shift in intestinal microbiota composition resulting in an imbalance between beneficial and harmful bacteria. This can result in a decreased nutrient digestion and utilization, leading to reduced production performances, increased incidence of health problems, wet litter and even mortality. During the years, bacteria developed antibiotic resistance which resulted in a ban on the use of AGPs in feed for food producing animals in Europe and other countries where the awareness has been raised. In order to maintain health and performance of livestock, the market needs a tool which stimulates an optimal gut balance in animal bodies.

FRA has developed FRA Gut Balance: a specific formula containing mainly 1-monoglycerides of propionic acid, butyric acid, caprylic acid and capric acid. Feeding this product will stimulate an optimal gut balance in poultry, resulting in improved health and production performances.

1-monoglycerides

Extensive research shows that short and medium chain 1-monoglycerides possess antibacterial and animal performance improving properties. FRA Gut Balance contains 1-monoglycerides of short chain fatty acids to inhibit gram-negative pathogenic bacteria and 1-monoglycerides of medium chain fatty acids to inhibit gram-positive pathogenic bacteria. As a result of the unique mode of action, 1-monoglycerides are active in the entire gastrointestinal tract. It is also suggested by literature that 1-monoglycerides have the potential to be used as an alternative for preventive use of antibiotics.

Above results are obtained from a trial in which broilers were challenged with coccidia, inducing a secondary infection of Clostridium Perfringens. Results show that FRA Gut Balance Dry was able to improve both weight gain and feed conversion ratio. In addition, the results obtained in the FRA Gut Balance Dry group were much more uniform indicated by the smaller box plot. Hence, FRA Gut Balance Dry was able to reduce the negative effect of the infection on broiler performance as indicated by above box plots.

Dose levels used in this trial:

FRA Gut Balance Dry: 3 kg/ ton feed (day 0-14); 2.5 kg/ ton feed (day 15-28)

Narasin (anticoccidia): 70 ppm in the grower feed

Negative control: no additive, no anticoccidia
