Control ileitis with glycerides

Ileitis is a worldwide common disease in fattening pigs and causes serious economic losses. This gastrointestinal disease impairs digestion and growth performance. Ileitis is caused by Lawsonia intracellularis and the location of this bacterium inside the epithelial cells makes it quite difficult to treat.

Ileitis is an enteric disease which causes inflammation and a typical hyperplasia of epithelial cells (adenomatosis) at the transition of the ileum to the large intestine. This hinders the passage of digesta, resulting in impaired digestion and reduced growth performance. The location of the bacterium makes ileitis hard to treat and the signs are like other enteric diseases, which makes diagnosis more difficult.

Ileitis occurs in three forms: acute, chronic, and subclinical. The severe acute form is most common in fattening pigs and rearing gilts. Infections are characterized by pale animals, bloody/black diarrhea, or even acute mortality. In starters and growers (<70 kg), the chronic or necrotic form occurs more frequently. This form is characterized by gradual wasting and chronic diarrhea and causes the greatest economic damage. Ileitis may also occur in weaners and in sow herds.

Hygiene, prevention of stress and support of immunity are amongst the most important factors to treat this difficult disease.
