α-monoglycerides

One of the main issues in swine husbandry is efficient and sustainable animal production. Several factors such as raw material prices and increasing worldwide competition force farmers to optimize their production cycles. Moreover, farmers have to deal with animal welfare regulation, restriction of antibiotic usage and prevalence of infectious diseases.

Global health care

When pigs are subject to stress factors such as pig density, weaning, change of feed and change of social groups, they are highly susceptible to infectious diseases and metabolic disorders. These diseases can be caused by harmful bacteria like streptococcus, staphylococcus and E. Coli or viral infections and lead to decreased reproduction and growth performance, high mortality rates and lower profitability.

To support animal health, Framelco has developed and patented specific α-monoglycerides. They are a class of glycerides that are composed of a short or medium chain fatty acid linked to the first position of a glycerol molecule. α-monoglycerides are known for their strong antimicrobial and antiviral properties. Even stronger than the conventional and widely used short and medium chain fatty acids. Framelco successfully applies α-monoglycerides in piglet and poultry diets for many years worldwide both to prevent diseases and to increase animal performance. Pathogens do not develop resistance against α-monoglycerides, which is good news for global health care.
