One of the main issues in animal husbandry is efficient and sustainable production. Moreover, farmers have to deal with animal welfare regulation, restriction of antibiotic usage and prevalence of infectious diseases. Infections may lead to decreased reproduction and growth performance, high mortality rates and lower profitability.

Preventive use of antibiotics

To support the animal industry with these challenges, Framelco introduced applications based on alpha-monoglycerides. Alpha-monoglycerides are produced by esterifying a fatty acid to the sn1-position of a glycerol molecule. Their unique mode of action and characteristics result in a strong antibacterial and antiviral effect depending on the chain length of the fatty acid. Alpha-monoglycerides may serve as an alternative for preventive use of antibiotics. Moreover, alpha-monoglycerides are able to increase profitability by improving growth performance and reducing health problems.
